Hospital Bag Checklist for New Mums: What to Pack and Why It Matters
Packing your hospital bag can feel overwhelming - but with the right checklist, it doesn’t have to be. This hospital bag checklist is designed to help new mums feel calm, confident and ready for the big day.
If your due date’s creeping closer and you’re still not sure what’s going in your hospital bag, you’re not alone. Most of us pack, unpack and second guess it at least three times.
So this post is here to help. A realistic, mum-made hospital bag checklist - with notes, tips and a few gentle reminders that you’ve got this. We’ve even got a free printable if you prefer to tick things off by hand.
Whether you’re packing early or last minute, we’ve covered everything you’ll need (and a few things you’ll be glad you brought). You can also check out our Welcome Little One Outfits or our swaddle blankets to add a few handmade finishing touches to your hospital essentials.
For Mum: The Essentials
🗂 Important Documents
Your ID, NHS number or medical info, maternity notes, birth plan (if you’ve written one) -pop them in a zip pouch so they’re all in one place.
Writing a birth plan? This free template from Tommy’s can help you get started and make sure your preferences are clearly documented.
👘 Loose, Comfy Clothes
Pack something you can move in easily. A soft nightie or robe is perfect for labour and after. It doesn’t have to be fancy - just something that feels like home.
🧼 Toiletries
Bring a wash bag with travel-sized bits: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, face wipes, hairbrush. We recommend fragrance-free shower gel or perineal wash if you’ve had stitches. Keep it simple and kind.
🍫 Snacks + Drinks
A few favourites go a long way. Energy bars, trail mix, coconut water or electrolyte tablets can be a lifesaver if labour is long or you’re in overnight.
📱 Tech
Phone, charger, maybe headphones. You might want music, a podcast or just to message friends while you wait.
🩲 Pads + Underwear
Bring maternity pads or period pants - much more comfortable than hospital supplies. At least 5–6 pairs of big cotton pants too.
🧷 A Going-Home Outfit
Think comfort over style. Soft leggings or joggers, a loose top, cardigan. Layer up depending on the season.

For Baby: What to Pack
👶 First Outfits
Choose soft layers in newborn or 0–3 months. Our Welcome Little One baby outfits are ideal: jersey rompers, harem trousers or sleepsuits depending on the season.
🧣 Swaddle or Blanket
You can bring your own for that first cuddle moment. All our swaddles can be made in any print to suit your vibe.
🧷 Nappies + Wipes
The hospital usually provides these, but bring a few of your own just in case. Same with cotton wool pads or nappy cream.
🍼 Optional Extras
If you plan to formula feed, most hospitals provide starter bottles - but double check. If breastfeeding, you might like to bring nipple balm or breast pads.
🧺 Car Seat
You won’t need it until discharge, but make sure it’s fitted ahead of time and know how to use it. That first journey home will feel surreal, and it helps to feel ready.

For Birth Partners: Don’t Forget Them!
Your birth partner’s job is to support you - and they’ll do it better with a few basics packed too.
-
Change of clothes (it’s a long day)
-
Snacks and drinks
-
A list of contacts for birth announcements
-
A phone charger
-
Patience and encouragement 😉
Extra Tips for Packing Your Hospital Bag
✅ When Should You Pack?
Aim for 35 weeks just to be safe. Keep the bag by the door or in the boot of your car if you’re on the go a lot.
✅ What Kind of Bag Works Best?
A small suitcase or holdall you can open flat is easier than a deep tote. Packing cubes or labelled pouches make grabbing things mid-contraction less stressful.
✅ Don’t Overpack
You’ll have enough to think about. A focused bag = peace of mind.

You don’t have to pack perfectly. Just practically. And know that if you forget something -you’ll be OK. Babies don’t mind what brand of lip balm you packed.
