Swaddling is a classic tradition, used by of parents from all different cultures to give comfort, warmth, and security to their newborn babies - wrapping the baby in a blanket to emulate the soothing environment of the womb to which they have been so used to. Step 1: Choosing the Right Swaddle Blanket

Step 2: Lay the blanket Flat
Place the blanket on a flat surface, positioning it like a diamond. Fold the top corner down to form a triangle.
Step 3: Place Your Baby on top of the Blanket
Lay your baby face-up on the blanket, with their neck on the fold. Ensure that the blanket is not too tight around the chest.
Step 4: Wrap Your Baby Securely
Holding your baby’s right arm down flat against the body, pick up the left side of the swaddle and bring it across your baby's chest. Tuck the edge under the babies body. Repeat this technique with the other side.
Step 5: Secure the Bottom of the Swaddle
Fold the bottom of the swaddle blanket up and over baby’s feet, tucking it into the top of the blanket to secure it.
Step 6: Monitor Your Baby
It is important to monitor your baby whilst swaddled, especially during sleep. Ensure they are safe and comfortable. Unwrap your baby once they wake up and discontinue the use of swaddling once the baby can roll over.
Tips for Safe Swaddling:
- Temperature: Ensure that your baby doesn’t overheat by touching their back or neck. Avoid overdressing and maintain the room at a comfortable temperature.
- Use a Hip-Healthy Design: Ensure there is enough room at the bottom of the wrap for your baby to bend their legs up and outwards.
- Practice: Like any parenting skill, swaddling or wrapping your baby will take some time to get right.
